Reverie Choir: When Music Sounds

The title piece ‘When Music Sounds’, a setting of Walter de la Mare’s famous poem by Reverie’s Associate Composer Toby Young, is an emphatic expression of the intoxicating power of music: it brings vividness to the world around, it sparks the imagination, and it evokes memory – ‘When music sounds, all that I was I now am’. Reverie explores compositional responses, from 20th and 21st century British choral music, to the relationship between music, silence and the human condition. Linked to the transience of music, and its inevitable decay into silence, this programme considers the fleeting nature of human existence, as expressed in the pilgrim’s final journey in Vaughan Williams’ ‘Valiant for Truth’, and in the peaceful reflections in Howells’ exquisite ‘Requiem’. Conducted by Robbie Jacobs.
